HONGKONG
Hongkong is
home to about 7 million people
Roughly
one-third the size of U.S.’s smallest state, Rhode Island, this makes
Hongkong
one of
the most densely populated pieces of real estate on earth.

Peninsula

The night scenery of Hongkong is
spectacular. This is is the same view as above.

This was taken from Kowloon Peak area
with Kowloon in the foreground and Hongkong Island in the background.
The big empty area left and center is where the old Kai Tak airport
used to be. The area seen in this photo covers about 12 square
miles.
There are approximately 4 million people living in this small area
making areas of Hongkong some of the most densely populated on earth!

some great shots of what planes used to have to contend with in landing
at the Kai Tak Airport.
Below is a
satellite image from NASA. It is at least 10 years old, but still gives
a unique view of
Hongkong from space. One can guess the age of the photo because
the airport at Chek Lap Kok
which was completed in 1997 is not yet built. It appears that the land reclamation and leveling
of the Chek Lap Kok Island, on which the airport was built, had just
begun when the photo was taken.
One must also take into account that the photo was taken from a west
(bottom of photo) to east (top of photo) perspective across Hongkong.
Thus, Shenzhen is north of Hongkong (left side of the photo) and
Hongkong Island is on the south side (right side of photo).
The white line running from Sai Kung (east) to the western side of the
New Territories is the 100-kilometer (62-mile) MacLehose Trail. In
November 2002 our Skytrekkers hiking team finished the course in the
"Trailwalker" event in a time of 23 hours and 52 minutes. It was good
enough for an 83rd place finish among the 930 participating
teams.
Despite
Hongkong’s small size, more area is set aside for public parks than in any
other country in
the world.
It is not all a "concrete jungle"!

Ma On Shan
(Horse Saddle) is the 4th highest peak in Hongkong.
Stage 4 of
the MacLehose Trail goes a couple hundred feet or so below the
summit.
